Terrania asteroid guide: the Spaced Out! sandstone start and example seeds
AsteroidsEasy
What the compact Spaced Out! start gives you, what to build first and where the metal is, with three in-game seeds.
Terrania is the Spaced Out! sandstone start: a 160 × 274 cell asteroid with everything a colony needs packed into a smaller space, and a short way up to the surface for rockets. It anchors the Terrania Cluster, which also holds the Irradiated Forest Asteroid three hexes away, the Oily Swamp Asteroid at the end of the start teleporter, and the outer moonlets. The asteroid never rolls world traits, so every seed differs only in its geysers and layout.

| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | 160 × 274 cells |
| Survival chance | Ideal |
| Where you find it | Start asteroid of the Terrania Cluster in Spaced Out! |
| Starting biome | Sandstone: Mealwood, Bristle Blossom, Muckroot, Hatches and Shine Bugs. |
| Other biomes | Three sandstone water pockets, three or more marshes, five or more jungles (some steamy), two wastelands, a coaly granite barren, two or three slushy tundras, an icy surface and the magma core. |
| Guaranteed vents | A Cool Steam Vent in the jungle, a Natural Gas Geyser in the marsh, a Cool Slush Geyser and a Cool Salt Slush Geyser in the tundra, three tries at magma volcanoes, and three random geysers. |
| Peak light and radiation | 20,000 lux of sunlight and 125 rads of cosmic radiation at the surface. |
| Teleporters | A Duplicant teleporter and a supply teleporter pair link the start to the Oily Swamp Asteroid. |
Strengths
- A compact Terra. Algae, water, dirt, copper ore and the sandstone plants are all close, and the guaranteed vents give water and power without luck.
- Two cold vents are guaranteed: the Cool Slush Geyser and the Cool Salt Slush Geyser give water at -10 ºC, which is both supply and cooling.
- Three small volcanoes rolled on every sample seed, about 80 cells below the pod, a ready heat source for a Steam Turbine later.
- The surface is close, so the first rocket and the first trip to the Irradiated Forest Asteroid come early.
Weaknesses
- Less of everything than Terra: about 730 to 890 tonnes of Copper Ore and roughly 400 tonnes of Iron Ore on the sample seeds. Metal comes from the neighbours.
- Low sunlight at the surface (20,000 lux), so Solar Panel power is weak here.
- Jungles, some of them steamy, bring heat and chlorine close to a small base.
What to target first
- Cycle 1: Research Station, Outhouse, Oxygen Diffuser, Mealwood on Farm Tile.
- Cycle 1 to 5: Microbe Musher and a Manual Generator; the natural gas vent is usually within 75 cells for a Natural Gas Generator later.
- Cycle 5 to 20: tap the Cool Steam Vent or one of the slush geysers, then switch oxygen to an Electrolyzer.
- Cycle 20 to 40: research rocketry. The Irradiated Forest Asteroid has two Aluminum Volcanoes and two Gold Volcanoes on every sample seed.
- Cycle 30 onward: use the teleporter to the Oily Swamp Asteroid for crude oil, cobalt and sulfur.
Surviving Terrania
Terrania is forgiving for the first 50 cycles. The risk comes later, when a small asteroid fills with heat and the start runs out of metal. Plan rockets and the teleporter as part of the colony from the start: the neighbours carry the aluminium, gold, cobalt and oil the start lacks.

A power-first seed: the Natural Gas Geyser sits 42 cells to the right of the Printing Pod at (121, 103). Water comes from a Cool Steam Vent 55 cells below at (75, 62) and the guaranteed Cool Salt Slush Geyser 58 cells up at (117, 163).
A Volcano rolled on the left at (19, 137), next to a second Cool Steam Vent at (17, 123). Leave it sealed until you can build a steam turbine there.

The water-rich seed: three Cool Steam Vent vents within 61 cells of the pod, plus the Cool Slush Geyser at (92, 186). Together they average more than 6 kg/s.
A Carbon Dioxide Geyser 58 cells up at (90, 173) is a free cold source. Natural gas is farther, 74 cells away at (135, 74).

The Chlorine Gas Vent 65 cells below the pod is the vent to keep sealed.

The neighbours
The Irradiated Forest Asteroid is the rocket target three hexes from Terrania. On every sample seed it carried two Aluminum Volcanoes, two Gold Volcanoes, two Carbon Dioxide Geysers and a Salt Water Geyser, behind a layer of radiation. The Oily Swamp Asteroid at the end of the teleporter has crude oil, cobalt ore, lead and one or two Liquid Sulfur Geysers. Both have guides of their own.
Long-term plan
Terrania works as the home base of a multi-asteroid colony. Keep farms, bedrooms and research on Terrania, move heavy industry to the neighbours, and send metal and oil back by rocket or through the supply teleporter.
