Flipped Asteroid guide: the upside-down moonlet start and example seeds
AsteroidsHard
How to survive with magma overhead and little water, with in-game seeds and every geyser located.
The Flipped Asteroid is an upside-down moonlet. Its magma layer sits at the top, right under the surface, and the Printing Pod starts near the bottom of the map, 25 to 28 cells above the asteroid's floor on the sample seeds. Between them lie a small sandstone start, wastelands full of Sweetles, frozen biomes and a magma passage. The game rates its cluster, Moonlet Cluster - Flipped, Slim, one of the two hardest moonlet starts.

| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | 128 × 153 cells |
| Survival chance | Slim |
| Where you find it | Start asteroid of Moonlet Cluster - Flipped; a non-start Flipped Asteroid sits in three other moonlet clusters. |
| Starting biome | Sandstone: Mealwood, Bristle Blossom, Muckroot, Hatches and Shine Bugs, with up to two small water pockets and a resourceful sandstone pocket. |
| Other biomes | Four or more beetle wastelands, a worm wasteland, two or more frozen biomes, a magma passage and a small magma layer at the top, with an abyssalite border to space. |
| Guaranteed | A Liquid Sulfur Geyser, AETN heat sinks in the frozen biomes, the magma passage, and a teleporter pair to the Desolands moonlet of the same cluster. |
| Peak light and radiation | 30,000 lux of sunlight and 218 rads of cosmic radiation at the surface, above the magma. |
Strengths
- Sweetles (Sweetle), 26 to 33 per seed, and Grubfruit Plants in the wastelands: a ranch and a food source together.
- A Liquid Sulfur Geyser on every seed and 100 to 210 tonnes of Sulfur in the rock.
- AETN heat sinks and frozen biomes give cooling close to the base.
- The start sits 70 cells or more below the magma layer, in cool rock.
Weaknesses
- Water is scarce: about 200 tonnes of liquid water on each sample seed, and no Cool Steam Vent rolled near the pod on any of them. Hot steam and carbon dioxide geysers are the common rolls.
- The surface and space are behind the magma. Rockets and the first trips off the asteroid have to cross or bridge the magma layer.
- Little dirt (about 320 to 390 tonnes) and little algae.
- A Volcano rolled within 40 cells of the pod on two of the three seeds.
What to target first
- Cycle 1: Research Station, Outhouse, Oxygen Diffuser, Mealwood on the start dirt.
- Cycle 1 to 5: Microbe Musher on the small water pockets; recycle every drop through a Water Sieve once researched.
- Cycle 5 to 20: melt ice from the frozen biomes or condense a hot steam vent for the electrolyzer.
- Cycle 10 to 30: ranch Sweetles and plant Grubfruit.
- Cycle 20 onward: the teleporter to the The Desolands Asteroid for its steam vents and oil, and a planned route through the magma for rockets.
Surviving the Flipped Asteroid
The colony's natural direction is sideways and down, away from the magma. Water is the limit: count the start pockets, use ice from the frozen biomes, and use the teleporter early: the Desolands moonlet at its far end often has a Cool Steam Vent.
Build the first rocket platform deliberately. The magma layer is thick in places; dig a tunnel through obsidian or abyssalite where it is thinnest and insulate it before Duplicants use it.

|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid Sulfur Geyser | 98, 82 | 1.42 kg/s | 165 ºC |
| Volcano | 35, 41 | 1.07 kg/s | 1727 ºC |
| Carbon Dioxide Geyser | 101, 33 | 153 g/s | -55 ºC |
| Hot Polluted Oxygen Vent | 13, 20 | 143 g/s | 500 ºC |

Metallic Caves and Metal Rich: about 825 tonnes of copper ore. The Volcano is only 28 cells from the pod at (47, 48); a Steam Vent 56 cells away is the water source.

| Geyser | Cell (x, y) | Average output | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid Sulfur Geyser | 48, 98 | 1.48 kg/s | 165 ºC |
| Volcano | 47, 48 | 1.28 kg/s | 1727 ºC |
| Steam Vent | 106, 60 | 831 g/s | 500 ºC |
| Carbon Dioxide Geyser | 107, 42 | 216 g/s | -55 ºC |

Medium Boulders and Metal Poor. A Natural Gas Geyser 43 cells to the left at (16, 26) gives early power, and this is the only seed of the three with no volcano near the pod.

| Geyser | Cell (x, y) | Average output | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid Sulfur Geyser | 113, 93 | 1.79 kg/s | 165 ºC |
| Carbon Dioxide Geyser | 102, 70 | 130 g/s | -55 ºC |
| Carbon Dioxide Vent | 97, 47 | 109 g/s | 500 ºC |
| Natural Gas Geyser | 16, 26 | 101 g/s | 150 ºC |

The non-start Flipped Asteroid in the Metallic Swampy cluster, four hexes from the start: Slime Molds and Geodes, a Volcano, a Liquid Sulfur Geyser and 33 Sweetles. As a rocket target it is a sulfur and Sweetle outpost.

| Geyser | Cell (x, y) | Average output | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volcano | 33, 76 | 1.38 kg/s | 1727 ºC |
| Liquid Sulfur Geyser | 36, 105 | 1.34 kg/s | 165 ºC |
| Carbon Dioxide Geyser | 24, 62 | 156 g/s | -55 ºC |
| Natural Gas Geyser | 39, 27 | 96 g/s | 150 ºC |
Long-term plan
Once water runs, the Flipped Asteroid is a sulfur, Sweetle and magma world. Tap the top magma with a Steam Turbine, ranch Sweetles for food, and bring oil and water from the Desolands through the teleporter.
