Superconductive Asteroid guide: the niobium volcano
AsteroidsHard
Where niobium comes from in Spaced Out! and how to mine it, with three in-game seeds.
The Superconductive Asteroid is a 64 × 96 cell planetoid of magma, obsidian and niobium patches. The game describes rivers of magma around rich niobium.
Every sample held one Niobium Volcano averaging 1.0 to 1.4 kg/s, several times the output of other metal volcanoes, and 1,300 to 3,000 tonnes of Magma.
A planetoid like this one is generated from the seed number alone: the samples below came out identical in every cluster that used the same seed, and only the distance from the start changed.
| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | 64 × 96 cells |
| Where you find it | Every Spaced Out! cluster in this series: the Terrania, Folia and Quagmiris clusters, the five moonlet clusters, Skewed, and the classic-style clusters. It sits five to fifteen hexes from the start, depending on the cluster. |
| Biomes | Magma surface, two or three niobium patches and a small magma core. |
| Guaranteed | A Niobium Volcano, a Gravitas mining room and a landing area. |
| Peak light and radiation | 100,000 lux of sunlight and 375 rads of cosmic radiation at the surface. |
| World traits | None or one random trait. |
Strengths
- The Niobium Volcano: the only niobium source in these clusters, for thermium and other late-game materials.
- Very strong sunlight (100,000 lux) for solar power on site.
Weaknesses
- Magma everywhere: the whole asteroid is extremely hot.
- High cosmic radiation (375 rads).
- Nothing to eat or breathe.
What to target first after landing
- Arrive late, with insulated and heat-resistant materials.
- Build a sealed, cooled landing room.
- Tap the Niobium Volcano and ship niobium home.
Surviving the asteroid
Every building here must survive extreme heat. Plan the outpost with insulation and coolant before the first landing.

Role in the colony
The Superconductive Asteroid is a late-game destination. Its niobium is what the colony needs for thermium and the hottest industry.
