Marshy Asteroid guide: tungsten volcanoes and Experiment 52B
AsteroidsMedium
What the small marsh planetoid holds and how to work it safely, with three in-game seeds.
The Marshy Asteroid is a small, warm marsh planetoid. The game describes it as rich in organic resources like slime mold and algae, with air that carries a high disease risk.
Its landing room holds Experiment 52B, the resin tree, guarded by Pufts. Two or three Tungsten Volcano sit along the surface and the edges, the only tungsten volcanoes in these clusters.
A planetoid like this one is generated from the seed number alone: the samples below came out identical in every cluster that used the same seed, and only the distance from the start changed.
| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | 64 × 96 cells |
| Where you find it | Every Spaced Out! cluster in this series: the Terrania, Folia and Quagmiris clusters, the five moonlet clusters, Skewed, and the classic-style clusters. It sits five to fifteen hexes from the start, depending on the cluster. |
| Biomes | Three hot marsh areas (start, landing site, inactive), one or more inactive jungles and a small magma core. |
| Guaranteed | A Tungsten Volcano with up to two more, the Experiment 52B room, and two random rolls from slimy oxygen, natural gas, chlorine, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and hot polluted oxygen vents. |
| Peak light and radiation | 50,000 lux of sunlight and 218 rads of cosmic radiation at the surface. |
| World traits | None or one random trait. |
Strengths
- Tungsten: two or three volcanoes, the base material for the strongest heat-resistant builds.
- Experiment 52B for Sap and isoresin.
- Organics: Pufts, Pacu, Balm Lily, Pincha Pepper, Thimble Reed, Buddy Bud and Dusk Caps on several seeds.
- Magma in the core, about 700 to 1,000 tonnes.
Weaknesses
- Slimelung and polluted oxygen: the marsh air is a disease risk.
- A chlorine or hot polluted oxygen vent rolled on most samples.
- Small: about 64 × 96 cells, so heat from a tamed volcano builds up quickly.
What to target first after landing
- Land in suits and seal the marsh air away from the landing room.
- Harvest resin from Experiment 52B.
- Tap one Tungsten Volcano with a cooled room and ship tungsten home.
- Use the local natural gas or hydrogen vent, where it rolled, for outpost power.
Surviving the asteroid
Keep visits short or the outpost sealed. Germs and heat are the two problems; a cooling loop around the tungsten tap handles the second.

Role in the colony
The Marshy Asteroid supplies tungsten and resin. Both matter late, so it is a mid-game rocket target rather than an early one.
