Oily Swamp Asteroid guide: Terrania's teleporter target

AsteroidsMedium

What the Terrania teleporter target holds: cobalt, lead, rust and sulfur, with three in-game seeds.

The Oily Swamp Asteroid sits at the end of the start teleporter in the Terrania Cluster, five hexes from the Terrania Asteroid. The game describes it as a partially frozen world with an oily core, largely swampy but with a great deal of rust.

Every sample seed carried at least one Liquid Sulfur Geyser, plus cobalt ore, lead and rust, the materials Terrania itself lacks.

Where you find itTerrania Cluster, five hexes from the start; reached through the start teleporter or by rocket.
Peak light and radiation35,000 lux of sunlight and 187 rads of cosmic radiation at the surface.
ArrivalA supply teleporter pair, boon rooms with beds, a ration box and an outhouse, and an AETN heat sink on all three sample seeds.

Strengths

  • Cobalt Ore, 150 to 340 tonnes, and Lead, 370 to 480 tonnes, per sample seed.
  • Rust, 220 to 530 tonnes, for a Rust Deoxidizer.
  • One or two Liquid Sulfur Geysers per seed.
  • Crude oil in the core: 210 tonnes on the first sample seed, about 20 tonnes on the other two.

Weaknesses

  • Swampy biomes with Polluted Dirt and polluted water carry germs.
  • Little dirt and almost no algae, so the outpost needs supplies from Terrania at first.
  • Several Carbon Dioxide Geysers on two of the seeds.

What to target first after landing

  1. Teleport two Duplicants over and settle them in the boon rooms.
  2. Mine cobalt ore and lead first; send them home with the supply teleporter.
  3. Tap the Liquid Sulfur Geyser before it floods.
  4. Use the AETN as the cooling core of a later industry block.

Surviving the asteroid

The Oily Swamp is a mining outpost. Keep food coming from Terrania, purify any water before drinking, and seal the swamp biomes off from the rooms the crew sleeps in.

The smaller Oily Swamp Asteroid

The game ships a second world file with the same name: a 96 × 128 cell Oily Swamp Asteroid with a swamp arrival area, a rust biome, three or more oil-well fields and a barren core. It carries the same teleporter pair and boon rooms, but no Liquid Sulfur Geyser, and on both sample worlds its single geyser roll produced no geyser at all.

No cluster in the current game places this asteroid, so typing a seed never produces it. Players meet it in custom clusters built with cluster-editing mods such as Cluster Generation Manager. The screenshots below come from the game's own world generator: a Terrania Cluster game in which the Oily Swamp teleporter placement was replaced by this world file, so the cluster coordinate under each picture does not reproduce the asteroid in an unmodded game.

  • Strengths: lead (about 475 tonnes), Cobalt Ore (160 to 360 tonnes), 48 to 50 tonnes of diamond, 34 to 36 Slicksters, and Nosh Sprouts, Dasha Saltvine, Bog Buckets and Mellow Mallows to farm.
  • Weaknesses: no geysers, 3 to 24 tonnes of liquid water, and 9 to 14 Sporechids.
  • First targets: settle the arrival rooms, farm the wild crops, mine cobalt and lead, and send water through the supply teleporter.

Role in the colony

The Oily Swamp Asteroid supplies Terrania with cobalt, lead and sulfur. It is the first place a Terrania colony reaches without rockets, and it stays useful as a mining outpost for the whole game.
