Ellie: Happy birthday, nerd! Josh: Is this... the exact same cake I got you for your birthday? Ellie: So what? It was a good cake. Do you want some or not? Josh: I mean, yeah! It's just funny that you got me your favorite cake for my birthday. Ellie: If I'm paying for it, I may as well enjoy it. Josh: You can see why it's weird though, right? Ellie: Fine, whatever. You wanna pile on with everyone else and say I'm the worst, go ahead. Josh: I didn't say that! Ellie: I may not be, like, imprisoned by social niceties, but I have a pretty good grasp of basic human decency. Which is more than I can say for some people. Josh: Ellie, I'm really not- wait, like who? Ellie: Ha! I knew it. You're just as gossipy as me! Josh: I'll give you the first slice if you tell me. Ellie: Deal. Okay, you know that hippie ocean scientist Director Stern brought in? Josh: The guy who was teaching us box breathing in the cafeteria? Ellie: Probably. He's somewhere at the bottom of the Pacific right now. Anyway, you CANNOT tell anyone, but- Josh: He's what?? Ellie: He's not dead, dummy. He's on the Paladin with Frankie all summer. They're de-extincting amoeba or plankton or whatever. Josh: Whew. Okay. What'd he do? I thought he seemed nice. Ellie: If you stopped interrupting every two seconds, maybe you'd find out. Josh: Sorryyyyyyy. Ellie: I caught him recording a meeting with the Director. He came out of her office and checked a weird little device in his chest pocket. He looked very awkward when he realized I was standing right there. Ellie: He asked me where Dr. Broussard's office was, and he got really mad that she didn't work here? Like, chill! Why did you assume she did? Josh: Who's Dr. Broussard? Ellie: Seriously? Six-time winner of the Science for Humanity Prize? You really do live under a rock. Josh: Okay, okay. So...is that it? He was just... maybe recording... and disappointed that someone doesn't work here? Ellie: He didn't even say THANK YOU, Josh. Josh: Right. What a monster. Ellie: Exactly.
