"Kelpole" is the colloquial name given to Osculateus venerandum, a small free-moving organism spawned from microscopic eggs that attach themselves to Tower Kelp. These unusual critters possess only a few hundred neurons and rely primarily on leaf mimicry to camouflage them from predators during their brief lives. Formerly considered flora, Kelpoles were eventually reclassified as fauna due to their frequent inclusion on marine biologists' lists of top ten most adorable creatures. The term "flona" was rejected out of hand.
