Starnacles share DNA with both arthropods and echinoderms, though they retain elements of the latter's fascinating digestive mechanism. During feeding, a Starnacle's stomach is pushed out through its small mouthpiece to envelop the nutrient source. Digestion is completed outside the body, and the stomach then retracts. The process can be disturbing to witness. Fortunately, the organism's mouthpiece is located on its underside.
