Plants exposed to radiation sometimes drop mutated seeds when they are harvested. Each type of mutation has its own efficiencies and trade-offs. Mutated seeds can be planted once they have been analyzed in the Botanical Analyzer, but the resulting plants will produce no seeds of their own unless they are uprooted.
